Locol - Watts

August 26, 2016 by anne

As a person living in America, the land of the opportunity, you should have noticed by now that the opportunities aren’t the same for everyone. That some people have to work harder than others to overcome challenges. That others have doors opened for them just because of the high school they went to.

It is a place of assumptions, predispositions and stereotypes. We all have a choice to roll with these and stick with the status quo. It is the easy way to go. No harm or disappointment if you don’t reach or try. You also don’t get improvement or joy without trying to reach for the impossible.

When Roy Choi and Daniel Patterson decided to open the first Locol in Watts they didn’t just reach for the stars. They brought a community with them with the hope to lift more people up. [Read more…]

life choices & judging

life choices and the power of judging others

It is often these days that an article on Facebook and the comments that follow that article, I know…don’t read the comments, will get me so fired up I feel the need to put pen to paper and respond. Sometimes in the comments and sometimes those comments start to take on a life of their own to become their own essay. Today it is bringing me here to write a proper article on judging, alcohol and personal life choices.

Life choices are just that, choices WE make for OUR LIVES. I don’t make life choice for your life. I have no control over your life. A few days ago an article titled, “Giving up alcohol opened my eyes to the infuriating truth about why women drink“, was shared by a friend. It was a well written personal essay about one woman’s experience and how that experience framed her opinion. I am not even going to give you the gist of the article. While I highly recommend the article it isn’t necessary reading to get the point of what I want to say. This article brought about a strong debate by women on all sides. Some thought the author was judgey of other woman. Others thought she was angry. A few agreed with the points she made and thought she was spot on. [Read more…]

new adventures & big magic

new adventures & big magic

Hello, World!hello, world

For 9 years, how has it been that long, I have been writing on this little blog. My slice of the internet. It has morphed and changed over the years and it is sometimes hard to not imagine what this little blog could be if only I had poured my heart and soul into it over the years.

What I have learned over the years is that while I love food, I love writing and I love learning I don’t love them enough to try and make this a business or as a way of making any kind of money. I also don’t like how the self-induced competition with other bloggers plays with my emotions. This part hasn’t been healthy for me. Nor has the near-obsession with stats, traffic, and comments.
